Could you buy a really cheap drumset, than buy really good heads and have it sound like a expensive drum set?

im wondering because i hear about getting good drum heads, so would it work to buy a 300 dollar drum set than just replacing all the heads for better ones would that make the drum set sound like a 600 dollar drum set? did that make sense at all?

yes! i have the perfect head for you. evans hydraulics. these heads are well-known for making cheap sets sound better than they are. there are a few reasons for this:
-2-ply. in general, 2 ply heads will muffle or dampen some of the overtones you get from the drum. for a cheap set, the overtones probably wont sound very good since its based on wood type and quality. so these heads minimize those unwanted overtones.
-oil filled. there is oil in between the plies of these heads. this is used to further dampen crappy overtones.

evans makes great drumheads and is a leader in the industry. i used hydraulics on my first set and loved them. they sound good, are robust, and blue!!! just remember, there is a different kind of head for everything.

It all depends on how well the shells have been maintained. If the wood is cracked, warped, has water damage, etc., then it wouldn’t be that good of an investment, but if the shells look to be well maintained, then go for it. A couple scratches, nicks, and dings on the outer shell will only affect the appearance of the kit, not the sound.

Buy the kit, get you some good heads (with even the new, mid-range $5-600 drum kits, you’ll most likely have to buy new heads anyways) and a nice starter cymbal set (hi-hat, crash, ride), if the kit doesn’t include them, and that set will sound amazing.

My first set was a CB Percussion set that I picked up for $250. I traded the CB snare for my Pearl student/school drum and eventually traded the Pearl for a Ludwig piccolo snare.

The CB heads were still on it and they sounded like complete crap, so I swapped them out for Evans EC2 Clear tom heads. I put Evans EMAD 2 Clear batter and a Ludwig resonant heads on the bass.

For the cymbals, it came with some heavily used Sabian B8 Pro 14" hi-hats, a heavily used Sabian B8 Pro 20" ride, a new off brand 16" crash and 18" crash/ride. I added a Meinl 18" HCS China and a Meinl 12" HCS Splash.

I still have that kit and after 5 years, it still sounds good.

its possible, cheap drumsets lose their round very fast which means they become impossible to tune and maintain, good heads on a cheap drumset can sound decent enough to pass as a 600 dollar set but the quality of wood they are made of is bad. you could have all the shells re-enforced but in the end your 300 dollar set will end up costing you 600 dollars if you want it to remain as high quality as a 600 dollar one, and honestly 600 dollars for a drum set isnt that high quality, when you get into the waterfall bubinga sets from dw which are around 5,000-6,000 these sets quality are outstanding. if you are considering this i suggest you look at some of the taye kits and put one on lay away, throw as much cash as you can even if its not alot and just slowly pay one off

Good heads and more importantly good tuning will make any kit sound better. I don’t think there is much difference in how a $300 and $600 kit sound anyway. You are still in a price range of low quality wood at that price point. But no, better heads will not make cheap drums sound like expensive drums. That is in the shell, bearing edge, etc.
