Double Bass Drum Sets – The “Big Drum Set”

Double bass drum sets are also sometimes known as “big drum sets”. They are usually just eight or nine piece drum sets based off of the standard five piece drum set with an additional bass drum and two more rack toms. Typically an eight piece drum kit includes a five and one half inch snare drum, a couple eighteen, twenty or twenty two inch bass drums, a sixteen inch floor tom and four rack toms (common sizes are usually ten, twelve, thirteen and fourteen inches), hi hat and stands, one crash cymbal and two bass drum pedals.

The larger nine piece drum set usually comes with a sixteen and eighteen inch floor tom, two bass drum pedals, one ride cymbal, two crash cymbals and a hi hat along with the corresponding stands.

It should be noted that a single bass drum is all you need to play double bass rhythms as long as you have double bass drum pedals. It is not necessary to have a big double bass drum set. However, if you play Rock and Heavy metal music, double bass drums are probably more effective.

If you think the eight or nine piece drum set is big, there are even bigger ten, eleven and twelve piece drum sets! To get these larger piece drum sets, you essentially just need a few more rack and floor toms added to the eight piece drum set.

Typical configurations for the larger sets would be the snare drum (five or six inch), two bass drums (twenty to twenty two inch), sixteen and eighteen inch floor toms (one or two) and rack toms of sizes eight all the way to fourteen inches, a couple bass drum pedals, at least two crash cymbals, one ride cymbal, one or possibly two hi hats along with the cymbal stands.
